History of The Sacred Heart Brothers

SHB Logo

The Brothers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is an indigenous religious congregation, founded by Rev. Adrian Caussanel, a French Jesuit missionary, in the year 1903. The congregation was canonically erected on the 20th of June 1952 and recognized as an Institute of Pontifical Right on 11th February 1999. The charism of the congregation is Good News to the Poor in the love of the Sacred Heart. The vision of the congregation is to realize the Kingdom of God where equality, freedom, justice, peace and brotherhood prevail. There are about 250 Brothers distributed over 50 communities and rendering their services in the southern states of India and Madhya Pradesh and Bihar in north India. Brothers are involved in the educational apostolate, providing formal and technical education, including running special schools for the blind, mentally retarded and physically challenged children. Brothers are also involved in varied social work apostolates like empowerment of the tribal people and women. The mission and priorities of the congregation have been re-examined and re-oriented in the light of the Church’s preferential option for the poor while giving greater thrust to ‘justice’ in all its ministries. The congregation’s initiatives take into account the concrete social realities of the regions in which its communities are placed. The forms of its endeavours are adapted to the needs of the present day with regard not only for man’s spiritual and moral circumstances but also for his social, demographic and economic conditions. The congregation recognizes the ecclesial dimension of its communities which are called upon to share Jesus’ life mission. Thus, social action that flows from the Gospel receives high priority in the ministry.

History of BIRDS

(Brothers Integrated Rural Development Society)

The BIRDS (Brothers Integrated Rural Development Society) was started by the Brothers of Sacred Heart Jesus Society in 1997 in Bangalore, Karnataka, India. It’s a well-known organization in Bangalore. BIRDS passionately works for Community Development. The main area of the interventions is marginalized children and women-focused, such as education, health, income generation, civic amenities, and empowerment of the community. It is registered under the Karnataka Society Registration Act 1960. No. 3/77- 78. BIRDS was working among 2000 poor and dismissed towns of rustic Bangalore, working with progress in the nature of the existences of the women, youths, and children from the underestimated and mistreated networks of the general public. Finishing one-decade die-hard loyalty, BIRDS quietly affects the existences of poor people, directed with the soul and appeal of the establishing siblings. Denoting the chronicled accomplishment, this introduction of “Assets cum Training Centre” represents the finish of improvement drives as well as recognizes the dedicated administrations of the organizers. Way back in 1997, Rev Br. Victordass SHJ, the Secretary of BIRDS, made an informal study and analysis of the socio-economic condition of the rural areas in the North Bangalore District. The findings of the study were revealing; the people of the locality were living in abject poverty conditions; human rights abuse in the forms of child labor and bonded labor was common; welfare measures and social schemes were not reaching this population; NGOs have not approached this area. The pathetic situation of these marginalized people prompter Rev. Br. Victordass to initiate some awareness programs to raise the critical consciousness of the people and slowly involved them in the development of their community or village. The program gradually gained significance and momentum thus demanding the brothers to think of a separate department for community development work and hence BIRDS was formally started on 16th September 1998.
